JAINA’s Sadharmik Bhakti Fund - An Urgent Appeal
We hope all of you had uplifting Aradhana during the Paryushan and Das Lakshana and are in good shata. As all of you are aware,
COVID-19 has caused devastating effects all over the world. With this message, we are reaching out to you for desperately needed
help for certain Sadharmik families in India, who are experiencing unfortunate financial conditions made worse by COVID-19.
Many mid and low-income Jain families are going through severe hardships, but many are too proud to ask for help. Such circumstances
have caused extenuating situations such as a 75-year-old shravika taking care of her 52-year-old mentally-disabled son while
accepting cooking jobs at three different homes; Pathshala teachers going 5 months without salaries; a 68-year-old shravak
working as a night watchman to support his household with two grandchildren and a daughter-in-law because his 30-year-old son
passed away; a prestigious shop owner, who once was a Sanghpathi and viewed as well off, not being able to afford a bag of
groceries. There have even been reported cases of suicide. Hearing these heart-wrenching stories underscore the hardships these
families are going through.
We would like to raise $250,000 for this cause that will allow us to deliver Rs 5,000 to one thousand needy families
for 4 months.

2020 has been a year filled with unique circumstances. While the world may have come to a halt, Young
Jain Professionals enjoyed engaging and learning with Jains across North America. The traditional hustle and bustle of our
working lives leave little room for self-growth so YJP introduced a virtual wellness series and a competition or two along
the way.
In October we will be publishing a special COVID-19 issue of Jain Digest. It will contain the results of the survey we had
done to find out how the Jain community has dealt with the challenges of COVID-19. And we also have a few articles that discuss
the Pandemic from Jainism perspective. Soon after that, we plan to publish a Special Edition of Jain Digest that will cover
the history and current status of Jain Academic Education and Pathshala education in North America. Both these issues will
be very interesting and informative.
Around us, the world is changing. A pandemic has swept through the world, matters of social justice are combing through North
America, and many Americans are out of jobs. However, our religion has stayed fairly constant throughout all of this -- though
it may be susceptible to change, too.
Noting this, the Jain Center of Greater Boston, with support from JAINA LRP, and JITO, has developed a short, anonymous
survey that accurately captures the current state of Jainism and the Jain Way of Life. Targeting the approximately 150,000
Jains in the US and nearly 6,000,000 worldwide, the survey poses both demographic and lifestyle questions to provide a comprehensive,
current picture of the Jain religion. Once enough data is gathered, the results will be analyzed, and recommendations will
be provided to temple leaders, allowing them to better connect with their constituents and improve our religion for all practitioners.

Jain Story: Bharat and Bahubali (Part 1)
Before
his renunciation of worldly life, Bhagwan Rishabhadev or Adinath was known as King Rishabh and had two wives, Sumangala and Sunanda. By Sumangala, he had 99
sons, of whom Bharat was the eldest and the best known, and one daughter named Brahmi. By the second wife, Sunanda, he had one son named Bahubali and a daughter
named Sundari. All of them were given proper training in different arts and crafts. Bharat became a great warrior and a politician. Sunanda's son was tall,
well built, and strong, and hence was called Bahubali. In Sanskrit, ‘Bahu’ means arm and ‘Bali’ means mighty. Brahmi attained a very high level of literary
proficiency. She developed the first known script, known as the Brahmi script. Sundari was very proficient in mathematics. After Bhagwan Rishabhadev attained
omniscience, both girls renounced their worldly lives and became his disciples.
